Bio

Volunteered for Draft in 1965. Drafted 2 Nov 65 in Los Angeles. Flown to Fort Polk, LA for Basic. AIT at Aberdeen Proving Grounds as a Field Artillery Repairman. That was the last time I saw any Artillery until assigned to "A" Btry, 2nd Bn, 40th Arty, 199th Inf Bde and LOADED a M101A1 Towed Howitzer for that year. Saw first Artillery really when in Korea. Had all 2ID Artillery in my shop 70-71.

Military Experiences

Sep 1971 - Jun 1972
45Z Armament Shop inspector
This was last duty station. Basic at Fort Polk, LA, AIT at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD, then the 68th Maint Bn, Ft Campbell, KY, the "A" Btry, 2nd Bn, 40th Arty, 199 Lt. Inf Bde, APO SF, then to Ft Knox, KY where I worked with Civilians at Boatwright Field Maint. And the to the Hospital Holding Compant. From there to Fort Ord, CA and to Maint. Co. GSG, CDCEC. From Ord I went on TDY to Camp Roberts, CA and HLMR (now Fort Hunter Ligget). After almost two years I went to the 2ID in Korea. Then to my last duty station at Fort Meade, MD.
Sep 1968 - Jul 1970
Armament NCOIC
Worked with a Tech Rep from Weapons Command, a Mister Livingston. We locked heads on several occasions. Anyway, I got orders for Korea and basically told him to go "F♤○k" himself and left for Korea. Karma is a real Bitch. I'd been in Korea for about 3 months when the Weapons Command Rep there brought in his new replacement, a certain Mr. Livingston. At that time, I told him to get out of my shop and never to darken my door step again. He never once set foot in my shop. Moron.
Nov 1967 - Sep 1968
Foeld Artillery Reoairman.
Learned the Weapons systems on a M60A1 and the M551 Sheridan. Never saw any Artillery really until my assignmentor to Korea and the 702nd Maint. Bn. There I was responsible for ALL Division Artillery and at one time, half the Armour in the Division. First there were the M48A2C with the 90mm gun and we turned in all of those and got new rebuilt M60A1''s. I had 54 Tanks then, all new with a big problem. So idiot a the place the were built didn't tighten a nut inside the Main Relay Box. For all, it under the floor for the Gunner. Ok, it's 40 or so blew Zero outside. Tanks just sit ting in the cold. You have to remove the Gunners chair, floor to access that box. Tanks run on a 300,Amp 24 Volt System so whenever my wrench touched that box, POOF, sparks and smoke. All 54 Tanks needed that done
Nov 1967 - Aug 1968
Foeld Artillery Repairman
Worked with the civilians at Boat Wright Field Maint. No military units. Just individuals. I was the only GI working in the Armament Shop. Only worked and M113A1''s, M60A1 and M551 Tanks, no Artillery. So now I know more about the M60A1 than most Armour Weapons repairman. We figured out what was causing the 105 Tank gun to hang out of battery and not fire. Problem was the Recoil Spring that was designed for the 90mm Tank Gun. The spring would unwind inside causing abarsions on the Sleeves inside the Recoil Mech. I ran into that problem again in Korea in 1971, but that's another story.
