Bio

Joined Army Student Nurse Program beginning senior year of BSN program at St Louis University in St Louis, MO. Graduated in May 1967 and took state board exam 2 weeks later, but exams graded manually and RN not awarded till Sep. I entered active duty on Sep 15, 1967 and took Basic at Ft Sam Houston, TX.

Military Experiences

Jul 1971 - Apr 1973
Nurse Manager (Head Nurse)
Assigned as Head Nurse on Outpatient Orthopedic Clinic where I worked for 2 years. Vietnam was over, and I wouldn't be guaranteed concurrent orders with my husband when he finished his residency and reassignment. I left active duty and in June, 1974, my husband was assigned to Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, TX. Left behind many great memories...and our 4-month-old firstborn son.
Jul 1970 - Jun 1971
Nurse Manager (Head Nurse)
Had left active duty after DEROS from Vietnam but was dissatisfied with civilian nursing. Requested assignment to William Beaumont again and was assigned to CCU. Chief Nurse had not been notified I was coming; so she assigned me to the CCU whose Head Nurse was leaving soon. During that time I met my husband who was doing a rotating internship. We married in April and were reassigned together to the Presidio where he'd been accepted for a Residency in PM&R.
Nov 1967 - Aug 1968
Staff Nurse
Medical staff nursing on Pulmonary and Infectious Disease Ward. Monitored many admissions of new recruits with FUO for mono and more serious diseases. Also had long-term patients with TB. More acute ward served emphysema and lung cancer patients. One WWI veteran thought so highly of the Attending MD that he left him his gas mask when he was discharged. It was still in that office when I was reassigned to a nighboring ward at that hospital more than 2 years later.

Deployments

(1 year, 4 months)
Sep 1968 - Dec 1969
24th Evac, Long Binh Post, RVN
First 3 months assigned as general duty nurse on Pre-op and Recovery Unit. When promoted to CPT in December was assigned to Med Wards as Head Nurse. One unit of 30 beds filled mostly with young soldiers with FUOs. We monitored fevers and when source identified, began treatment for appropriate infections...most often malaria but some dengue fever
