Part of the deck crew
I joined the US Navy reserve to avoid being drafted because I smelled a rat. I figured that would be the best way I could survive. I did my active duty on a destroyer as part of the deck crew. We went overseas to the west pacific twice, mostly accompanying aircraft carriers bombing the hell out of a little tiny country. Twice I had to be in the gun mount loading projectiles to bombard the shore and at the end of that, I understood something was definitely wrong! I got out as quick as I could. We definitely need a defense department but that action and most of what we’ve done since World War II is more like offense. Telling these other countries that they should live like us at the point of a gun? There’s nothing patriotic about that! Let’s lead by example! The world is watching us.
