Military Experiences

Apr 1979 - Apr 1983
NCOIC Training, RAPCON
[This was McGuire AFB - this “joint base” stuff didn’t exist back then.] Back on Active Duty; earned my 7-level here; earned my Senior Air Traffic Controller badge and became crew chief qualified; ended as the NCOIC, Training where I created a classroom course for newly assigned Controllers which greatly refuced our initial certifications time and also completely rewrote our RAPCON Parts 1, 2 & 3 to make them current and bring them into compliance with AFR 60-1 (which, of course, was rescinded not long thereafter).
Dec 1974 - May 1977
Air Traffic Controller
First PCS after graduating ATC school at Keesler AFB (Honor Grad - I was motivated to avoid returning to VPS). GCA Controller; got a little Tower time, too, before they cancelled the dual qual program. Eventually became a trainer. Initially worked with Mark 10 IFF/SIF (64-code capability, only - 4096 codes was for those overpaid prima-donna FAA Controllers - which, uh... I eventually became).
May 1973 - Dec 1974
Voice Processing Specialist
After Basic (3702 BMTS, FLT 590); shipped to Presidio of Monterey (Army Installation; location of the DLIWC, nka Defense Language Institute, Foreign Lanuage Center) to learn to speak Mandarin. After graduation, PCS’d to a USAF SS base to learn the equipment). Because a LOT of VPS troops world-wide had legally void enlistment contracts (myself included), I was called to CBPO to sign a new contract. Instead, I requested to cross train into ATC with the agreement that, should I fail the ATC Tech School, I would return to my VPS position.
