Commander Gauck commissioned through Aviation Officer Candidate School, NAS Pensacola then completed pilot training at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas and NAS Whiting Field, Florida earning his Wings of Gold in Sept. 1989. He served with HS-15 on USS Forrestal (CV 59) and USS Saratoga (CV 60). Volunteer coach for the Air Force Academy Rodeo Team.
