Bio

My military career was spent entirely in the Kansas Army National Guard. I did twelve years between 13 January 1980 and 12 January 1992 and another three years and six months between 13 July 1998 and 12 January 2002. I didn't go to the First Gulf War because the unit I was in at the time was training up from M60 MBTs to M60A3 MBTs. I missed the Second Gulf War because I was not stop lossed. I was born in Seneca, Kansas and grew up in Eastern and Central Kansas. I pretty much followed my parents around this part of the country as they moved from one teaching job to another or after dad became a student minister in the United Methodist Church or military posts after dad went into the Army between 1968 and 1972. After my 17th Birthday I enlisted in the KSARG and served on and off with them for a total of 15 years and 6 months.

Military Experiences

Aug 1981 - Jan 1986
Special Weapons Assembler/ Reader
During the period of time listed I was in the Special Weapons Section of each of the listed Firing Batteries in turn. We got reflagged midway through my first six years of service and at the beginning of my second term. I went from being a Cannon Crewman to an Armored Fighting Vehicle Crewman in January 1986 with the reflagging and breaking up of the then C Btry 2/ 130 FA. I went with the detachment that became part of Co B 1/ 635 Armor. During my time as first an Assembler and later as the Reader I worked on 8 inch Atomic Projectiles. From this experience I have an inactive Secret Clearance. This was my first and only direct experience in leadership as our OIC and NCOIC had other duties and I was the one left in charge of the Special Weapons Team.

Deployments

(1 month)
May 2000
San Diego, California
I was not deployed away from home station during my time in the Kansas Army National Guard except for Annual Trainings. During my two enlistments the closest I got to leaving the states was Annual Training 2000 and Annual Training 2001. Each of those were spent on the border between California and Mexico.
