I’m scrubbing the vacancy portion of the slotting report trying to see were I might wind up that’s within my selected mileage. There are a few positions that are listed as encumbered, does that mean I can’t fill that slot? Also what is more accurate, the slotting reports or the HRC vacancy search? Thanks

Well I cannot say about HRC, but I can say not all units report their slot vacancies on time, they will hold on to that slot for as long as they can if they have someone in mind to fill it. If they don't have someone most units will report the vacancy immediately so they can get it filled.

I can add this, if you want to know about certain slots find a retention NCO for that area, they know the openings better than anyone and can use their system to look into just about any unit.

I’m assuming you were boarded and made the recommended list for promotion to E7, and are looking for a new home. First off congratulations! Like SSG (Join to see), said the vacancy reports can be fudged, and the HRC vacancy search is only as good as the reports. Your best bet is the retention NCO in your area. Or you can talk to your buddies in other units, they can give you a straight answer. Once you know what’s available you can apply for those positions with the Commander and 1SG, or you can just wait around for HRC to put you wherever.
