I have used steel shot for grouse and the distant and patterns are far shorter and tighter than lead. Here in Minnesota, steel is required near water bodies even if your hunting upland birds. I changed over to steel shells for all my game bird hunting. It is a heavy fine if a lead shell is found in your truck during and inspection.
