https://youtu.be/EvvLxC1rvrQ“Sink Argentina's Carrier 1982 - The Secret British Falklands War Mission.” Following the outbreak of hostilities on 1 May 1982, the Argentine carrier ARA Veinticinco de Mayo (V-2) (which itself was a former Dutch carrier, HNLMS Karel Doorman, purchased from Britain as the HMS Venerable after WWII) that had former US navy S-2 Trackers that detected the British fleet late that day, and a strike by all eight former US navy A-4Q Skyhawk jets was prepared, all scheduled to take-off at dawn. The carrier also had ASW capabilities of former US Navy SH-3 Sea King Helicopters, positioned to attack the Royal Navy Task Force. The attack did not take place because subsequent Tracker sorties had failed to relocate the British fleet.
On May 2 1982 the British nuclear-powered submarine HMS Conqueror sank General Belgrano. HMS Conqueror became the first nuclear-powered submarine to fire in anger, launching three Mark 8 torpedoes at General Belgrano, two of which struck the ship and exploded. Twenty minutes later, the ship was sinking rapidly and was abandoned by her crew. General Belgrano was unable to issue a Mayday signal because of electrical failure; this and poor visibility meant the two escorting destroyers ARA Piedra Buena and ARA Bouchard (both also ex-United States Navy vessels) were unaware of the sinking until some hours later. A total of 323 men were killed.
