Flag raising by Easy Company, Second Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment 2/23/1945.
We were at the Marine Corps museum about 5 years ago. We talked to a Marine who was at Iwo. He was the only guy in his platoon of 40 who was not killed or wounded. They landed way down that black beach on the first day.
The unit that I was in in the 1980s landed with 225 Marines and sailors. Item Company 3rd Battalion, 24th Marines. They received 75 replacements and left the island with 76 people.
The third picture was taken a couple of weeks ago.
