Some of us don't have perfect eyesight and a binocular is a waste (I know, I was born with "Lazy Eye" and will never have use of a binocular). So a decent monocular is a the way to go. Also it saves weight and space if you are back packing.

I carry a monocular in my hunting pack. Lighter and less room than a pair of binoculars.
