There is one more little fact about the battle of the Ia Drang Valley . That Huey pilot that flew into heavy enemy fire to evacuate wounded members of the 7th Cav was Maj. Bruce Crandall . He took it upon himself to go in there after the Medivac pilots refused because it was to dangerous. He evacuated over 70 wounded during the battle and for that was awarded The Medal Of Honor . I had the honor and privilege to be his doorgunner a few times while assigned to the A Co 229th AHB . But that was after the battle of the Ai Drang Valley and before he was awarded the MOH . It wasn't until years later that I learned he had been awarded the MOH .

Tough battle. I have shown this movie to my high school students. After the movie they wrote a letter home as a soldier describing the action during the battle. This movie took on a different meaning.
