You're going to see a bigger rise in it, soon enough. Most games have this competitive PvP element to them, but there's a growing subset of games that are based around cooperative, objective-based gameplay other than CTF. You're getting true development of team-based gameplay. When they start to combine this into a PvP model, you're going to see a new breakthrough in games.
And by the way, the thought of eSports is weird to me, too. And I'm a heavy gamer.

I have played em all. RPGs require imagination, story telling, and the luck of the craps table. Video games are all about hand eye coordination. I enjoy both, but for totally different reasons.
