When I was a GS-15 I was invited into the Navy Chief's inner sanctum on board the USS Carl Vinson. It was quite an experience. When I informed my hosts that my Dad was a WWII / Korea Chief Machinist Mate aboard Fletcher and Gearing Class Destroyers - my stock rose a little. I got to see a great deal in 35 years in the Army - as both a LTC and GS-15. However, my memories of having lunch in the Chief's mess on board the USS Carl Vinson was one of the most special. My Dad had passed away years earlier and I could never tell him about it. But I do believe he was smiling down on me when I was in that Chief's Mess.
