Interesting to note that she had manganese in her hold when she was lost and not coal as she was designed for. I am not really sure if that makes a difference, but it is interesting. SN Greg Wright . Thanks for posting this fascinating mystery of WW I Naval History, PO1 Tony Holland .

Thanks for the tag, I was unaware of this bit of history. Love learning new stuff about our Navy. IIRC, Manganese once ignited, cannot be put out with water. So that seems like a likely culprit. The crew might not have known it.
