This is just campaign rhetoric and kind of funny at that. You don't have to think too hard to see the mixed message, first decrying the plight of people out of work and then jumping to refugees. There is, as you pointed out, no connection. Also, please, let's stop calling Progressives/Leftists/Democrats "Liberals". They are worthy of that appellation...
