I purchased a copy of his book when it first came out and have read it many times! My favorite quote of his has always been
“Leadership is solving problems.
The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day
you have stopped leading them.”
This is definitely a timeless philosophy!

So true indeed, thanks for sharing. It is also a good measure of trust and scope of influence. Trust is needed for subordinates to know that one cares enough to help. Scope of influence could be measured by the various type / frequency of the issues one is assisting with.

I have a lot of respect for GEN Powell. He met my daughter at a grocery store in Alexandra VA. She recognized him and he made a joke about everyone confuses him with Samuel L Jackson.

I recall one that was something like "Don't make a decision until you have to". The idea being that you want to make timely decisions, but doing it before you have to may deprive you of late breaking information or a change to the situation. So make the decision when you must, and gather all the info you can in the mean time.

And I guess there is a new addition to the list: "Use private email to avoid FOIA information requests". ;)
