Perhaps the first major operation of the new United States Air Force was "Operation Vittles" -- The Berlin Airlift of 1948-49. It became necessary when the Soviet Union stopped all surface-traffic from West Germany into Berlin, located 110 miles inside communist East Germany, in the Soviet zone of occupation. Premier Stalin was trying to squeeze the West out of Berlin by starving the Berliners. U.S. President Truman was determined to remain in Berlin & ordered the City to be supplied by air. After eleven months of non-stop flying food, medical supplies, coal, & other essentials, the Soviets capitulated & removed their road-blocks to allow Western traffic into the beleaguered City. Although assisted by the U.S. Navy & air assets of the U.K. & France, it was the U.S.A.F. which won the campaign Germans still call "Luftbrucke" or Air Bridge.
