An Honor Too Far, or Far Too Many Honors?

If the act(s) meet the qualifications, meets all criteria and otherwise falls within the prescribed regulations, award the medal. The nation does damn little to recognize the sacrifices of its men and women in uniform. IMO, the number of awards given is a far cry from the actual number of acts that warrant the award of a Medal of Honor!

1000 sounds like too many. If it came to that many, I believe it would downgrade the extremely high standards of the medal. I do support a review for possible upgrades, but 1000 is out of the question if you want to preserve the standards of the medal. If that many would deserve upgrade from Iraq/Afghanistan operations, then certainly many more from Vietnam might be deserving. Even though now, its a smaller percentage of compared to Vietnam, 1000 awards of the Medal of Honor would be a much higher percentage than Vietnam. Awards like the Distinguished Service Cross, (Navy Cross; etc.) and even Silver Star go far above and beyond. Most combat vets don't come out with more than the Bronze Star.
