Many companies are taking the approach that they hire employees based on their character and train them on the skills they need rather than just hiring for skills and treating them like crap. The turnover in employees has been much lower within companies that are willing to invest in their employees. Within that mindset, Veterans are much more attractive than the average candidate for the following reasons:
1. We understand and adapt well to training. From the moment we enter the military we are training every day. Learning something new. OJT or institutional learning, it doesn't matter, we are learners.
2. Our character is, on average, much more desirable than the average citizen and our character has been demonstrated through our honorable service to our country, our ability to see a mission through to the end, and our need to keep ourselves drug free to maintain our jobs in the service.
3. We thrive in team environments. Companies that invest in training also foster environments of shared learning experiences, bonding employees together quickly as they share what they learned with each other. Being valued as an individual within a team is the most desirable environment for most Veterans.

In some jobs/positions this seems to be true, but not in all.

What I find un fair is many employers to include USAA go by a persons credit...and like everyone else that have gone through hard times and their credit is not so stellar, there are many VETS who have credit issues...

While we agree with the premise and that veterans should be attractive candidates in the hiring process because of the characteristics they developed in training, I have not found it the case that employers or the civilian market share this across the board. In short, I have not found it true that Veterans have advantages in the civilian Job Market?
