European policies have been a disaster, The UK has chosen to pay for a wall to be constructed in Calais in order to halt the flow of migrants. Europe will have economic and political problems for decades. American and Canadian policy has been much more discriminatory in allowing migrants in. Unfortunately the right wing has been using the example of Europe to hammer this administration while its policies are sound.

To suggest that President Obama intentionally unleashed a flood of refugees to destabilize Europe is to give him way too much credit. It is similar to charges that President Bush had demolition charges built into the WTC so that years later he could cause its destruction and thereby give him an excuse to invade Islamic countries. Again, who would argue that President Bush is that smart or prescient? The truth is that we are living with "unintended consequences" of multiple bad decisions by multiple world leaders going back as far as the Balfour Agreement and maybe even further. The truth is that diplomacy is an attempt to regulate chaos theory with a sledge hammer. I challenge anyone and everyone to name one diplomatic "success" that didn't have unintended consequences. (I can't wait for someone to mention any of President Obama's such as "winning the war in the Middle East" or the Iran Nuclear Treaty or opening relations with Cuba. Obviously, the ripples and echoes of those won't be fully known for many years, will they?

The Peace of Westphalia, the Camp David accords... there will almost always be unintended consequences, that doesn't mean they aren't outweighed by the good of the diplomatic action.

Thanks CPO Tim Dickey for sharing an intriguing discussion. I would take the Austrian record holding athlete's comments with a grain of salt.
Many European leaders are having to rethink their immigration policies. Unfortunately for many of them it is too late to put those horse back in the barn so to speak.
