General (Retired) Austin always seemed like a good officer and leader from my vantage point. I believe he was the first AFRICOM Commander ever and had other highly placed posts in the Army and Joint Service assignments.
I guess the trend lately, has been favoring newly retired officers, but there are many other veterans & combat leaders in our nation who could do a superb job as well, in the Sec Def role.
