Ahhhh, Bruce Fleming. He's been writing and re-writing the same whiny opinion piece for years. This is the 2016 iteration. I don't know what has made him into such a bitter, tainted person.

I think a better question is if the Black Knights will ever defeat the Middies again in football.

Capt Walter Miller it is an interesting article. I highly doubt that you will find anyone who supports shutting down the academies. As for fleecing taxpayers, who pays when a state funded school gives out a scholarship? Recruiting Athletes, all schools do that. The cadets recruited still have to meet the criteria for admittance to the academy. If your concern is that they are dumping the service after five years, then the simple solution is to change the commitment. Make it two for one. For every year that a cadet attends the academy, they owe two years of service, or up it to ten. If they serve ten, they are halfway to retirement, that at least will give them something to think about. To just say scrap over 150 years of military tradition because somebody finally sees the money pit, is ridiculous. Make changes. Adapt to the modern world.
