The Reagan is a nuclear powered carrier. This means there is radiation present in low levels anyway. IT also means that the RL division (radiological technicians) can monitor any work needed with ease... the harder issue is on conventionally powered ships in which contamination areas need to be established to do repair work. This increases the cost of such work exponentially.

I served as a radiological controls officer on a repair ship, among other nuclear assignments, so I'm very familiar with the issues. For non-nuclear trained ships, it can be a problem, if they need to make voyage repairs, since we don't have Destroyer Tenders any more...

Not intending this to be a criticism but your link didn't even tell us what the subject was because the headline was truncated. You needed to click the Facebook link to see what was being talked about.

Also you linked to a Facebook post which linked to a military.com article. Probably would have been better to link directly to the article: http://www.military.com/daily-news/2016/03/14/16-us-ships-that-aided-japan-still-contaminated-with-radiation.html?ESRC=todayinmil.sm

In any case, thanks for bringing this story to the forefront.

The numbers we're talking about here are negligible.

There's no cover up, this is well known, documented and continually controlled. I spent three years on the GW.
