I am somewhat familiar with this situation having graduated from the South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Academy in 2013. (I self sponsored and completed the training). This is not completely a matter of the police department rebuilding. It is a matter of voting in elected officials that give a damn about the department. Until the citizens of San Jose start holding accountable their elected officials, I don't expect things to change much in the area.

For brevity sake, I summarized the politics. There are at last count six council seats up for grabs, but two will most likely support the current administration. The other four could tip the balance back in favor of employees, including the SJPD. SJPD went from being one of the top police agencies in the country to being in the middle of the pack. Not good for Silicon Valley. I still recommend SJPD for anyone looking for a new career with long term prospects for improvement. The residents of San Jose won't tolerate much more before throwing all of the old politicians out.

SJPD had to cancel their last academy, because they didn't have enough recruits who applied and survived the hiring process. The process includes a written test, physical agility (if you can pass the Army PT test, you'll be able to pass this test), thorough background investigation, lie detector, psychological written and interview and finally, the chief's interview. If you make it through all of that, then you attend a seven month police academy, followed by three to four months in the Field Training Officer program. It is a tough process, but if you have the desire, decent background (they are not looking for perfection, just maturity) and focus, you will do well.

Update: SJPD just graduated a large class of new recruits today. It's not too late to join what I believe will be a great organization. SJPD is veteran friendly and I would like to see more veterans joining the department.
