A damn good metaphor. I'll give you another that I used to explain the advantages of using systems and applications built around security rather than building security around vulnerable applications and systems. When President Bush strode onto the Olympic Field in Salt Lake City to open the games, his overcoat appeared to be draped over a bullet-proof cone. In short, he looked like a Dalek from Dr. Who with a human head attached. Yes, a head shot from a concealed position high in the stadium would be difficult, but not impossible. Those who purchase and install vulnerable applications and systems are condemned to the same problems the Secret Service face every day and can never guarantee complete security. Thus, security must be a prime design criteria from the very inception of every installation
