On 19 April 1989 while conducting gunnery exercises off the coast of Vieques, Puerto Rico an explosion occurred in the center gun of turret two aboard USS Iowa. 47 sailors (everyone in the turret) lost their lives in the incident.
Every year memorial services have been held at Iowa Point on the Norfolk naval base where Iowa was home ported and additionally aboard the Iowa herself since her opening as a museum in San Perdo, CA in 2012.

I served with a USS IOWA sailor who had only been onboard a short time when the horrible incident occurred. He knows the name of every single crew member who lost their lives that day, he immortalizes them where ever he serves and he ensures that his crew members know absolutely everything there is to know about the ship because when an accident happens, everyone should know everything about everything. He is at every single Memorial Service and makes sure that we all never forget these honorable service members who were gone too soon.

I remember this. It was a horrible event. So sad for the families of those sailors who lost their lives.
