On 4 May 1945 at Lüneburg Heath, near Hamburg, Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery accepted the unconditional surrender of the German forces in the Netherlands, in north west Germany including all islands, and in Denmark and all naval ships in those areas. The Germans surrendered, yet in Bulgaria 2 of my great uncles and my grandfather were captured by the Russians in July 1944 and sent to a POW camp for a couple years.
