On This Day in History: The USS Indianapolis, the ship that transported crucial components for the atomic bomb that would help to end the war, was sunk by a Japanese torpedoe. Of the 1,196 men aboard, 900 made it into the water alive. Their ordeal—what is considered the worst shark attack in history—was just beginning. The men were subjected to intense exposure, thirst—and sharks. Only 317 sailors survived the shark attacks and the sinking to be rescued. The ordeal of the Indianapolis survivors remains the worst maritime disaster in U.S. naval history. May the fallen rest in piece.
