That has to be just about the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Seriously? your looks dictate how capable you are? No. just..no. If you are basing a soldier off her looks then I believe there is a different problem at hand.

The LtCol isn't wrong about the perception. I see often that any female who is disliked must've gotten where she is by sexual favors or the like, particularly if she's both disliked and at least moderately attractive. That's not to say that it's okay that such a standard of judgment exists in some places - certainly not all - but that it does, in fact, exist. I honestly have no idea why she brought it up at all. I don't see what the merit is in that discussion. Is she suggesting that we don't promote attractive women, just to avoid perceptions? That we not allow them to join up to begin with? I really don't get her point; but that doesn't mean her statement was inaccurate.

LCDR (Join to see) - From the sound of it yes she believes we shouldn't be advertising nor using attractive females in military articles because her looks takes away from the intent of the mission or article itself. Primarily she just believes if you're attractive you shouldn't be in charge. I honestly feel her statement was entirely inaccurate. Yet again I will say that if you base a soldier primarily off her looks and then her leadership style there is an issue. I can understand what you're getting at but how can you say it's okay? Yes it is true that people believe sexual favors could be involved in certain peoples promotions that does not make it true. Furthermore, that does not take away from the fact that that particular individual is a good leader or an intelligent soldier whether or not she is liked or disliked by her peers or subordinates. At the end of the day it's what's on paper that dictates what kind of soldier you are dealing with not their looks.

I don't recall ever saying that it was okay, rather that it was the reality of perception among many idiots.

I find it interesting that this COL who said this is far from the attractive category. Perhaps she is a little jealous?

Example is the only way to lead by! You can send your troops out to meet the enemy and steer that column from the rear or you can step up on that berm and tell them to follow your lead.
