With out the dark humor you slowly put yourself into a funk that you may not be able to come out of. I'm speaking from experience .

Dark humor has always been a desensitizing and coping mechanism for warriors of all cultures since the beginning of conflict. When it is time to fight, you have to stop being human and embrace the ugly situation you are in. It's something people who have not been in combat will never understand, being a monster of yourself. Any combat veteran can appreciate how to "fight in the shade".

Well put, GySgt.
I guess the more pressing matter is, as a fighting force, are we really cultivating a nature within the ranks of personnel who can "fight in the shade" or are we saturating a climate for the service members of gum drops, rainbows and cinnamon? If we are, is this not a hindrance?

No one will understand this kind of humor, especially not the American public. But its not for them anyway. It's the reason why you can't come to work with a dirty uniform, it's why we shave our faces. This is how we want America to see her troops. Dark humor will always find its way where it's funniest. In the coldest, darkest, most miserable situations where no one else would find it funny but the guy next to you experiencing the same thing. When the time is right, you won't have to explain these jokes to anyone, they will be too busy laughing. No point in trying to push it on them in garrison.
