I was in a staging facility in a place called Al qasumah (which is a close spelling) the smoke made it look like night. We all stayed in our tents sleeping in. I don't remember any smell, but we couldn't see the sun. Our Red Cross was black, our tents were black, and it was eery

Not nearly enough said about that time. People like me immeshed in the day to day and our own experiences, totally detached from that conflict and you who served.

We had a Heavy detachment (SeaBees) up there prepping and then helping them get ready to start capping them off. By the way it was always dark from the oil clouds and oil coming down. We had even at one time put the MOPP suits on when working up near the wheels. As most troops left we stayed and cleared the all camp sites and cleared roads on the high way of death. First up on ground and started building all the camps for troops coming in nothing was before we started then we tore it all down. NMCB -5, NMCB 4 RNCB 24 did most of the work up north even built the left hook road, Breeched Berm with Marines also helped with a fake battle field that would be a big part in the left hook deception (I MEF/ Task Force Troy 1st Recon)..

Thanks for sharing, I always forget there was a strong naval element to the war.
