4 Reasons I Am Resigning My Commission As A Naval Officer

I am researching different things that people have put into their resignation letters in order to be honorably discharged from their Commission as a Naval Officer. The vast majority of the letters I have seen are very positive and encouraging with a negative response being rare.
Then I ran across this link. In it, the woman who wrote it had created a positive and nice resignation letter, and then divulged further (in unofficial means where it would not affect her resignation) more of the less-savory reasons on why she resigned.
As long as you are professional in the manner that you write your resignation letter, why would anyone not divulge the entire reason as to why they are resigning?

I refused a commission & think it was one of the worst decisions I ever made. I reapplied for OCS a year later, & the application was rejected by the Marine Corps. But even today at 80 years old I have deep regrets for this decision that was based solely on money.
So I would suggest to not resign your naval commission because you too might just regret that decision for the rest of life. But whatever you decide I wish you well

What was your reason for not accepting the OCS appointment originally, then later wanting to re-appply?

The salary was the reason and I was undecided about doing 3 more years in the Marines. A 2nd Lt with 8 years of enlisted service earned $350.00 per month and the Aerospace Industry was offering a much higher salary for professional salaried positions in Engineering, Marketing and Finance. A year later I realized money was not everything and Vietnam was in the news so I had second thoughts but it was too late .

Note-Im not trying to sound critical; many reasons do make sense. in my experience with people, many leave due to illness in the family or spouse not wanting you to serve (although I couldn't marry someone that demanding) Even in those cases, I usually advise people to stay affiliated in some capacity such as IRR; however, I realize an OCS commission with normally require an active or active reserve obligation.

LTC (Join to see) - Yes sir but back then we were all glued to our TVs watching the early days of the Mercury Space Program. North American was in the news for receiving a contract to build the Apollo Project. So I sent them a resume and they offered me a position that paid @ 3x what I would have earned as a Marine 2ndLt.

Sometimes less is more. I personally think people sound like idiots when they blame family stability, finances, talent management, deployments, etc. These were all known issues before they ever joined. If a statement is required for your service I personally would keep it very short and that is just what I did or tell them something different. However, if the military truly cared they would do exit interviews, but obviously they don't care. Our attrition is factored in and they will be just fine without us.

Everyone has that one reason as to why they should leave the military; enlisted or officer. I'm telling you from my perspective is to not give up on it. Yeah you're going to run into things like the monotony, not getting the recognition you deserve, but honestly, IT DOES NOT CHANGE OUTSIDE OF THE MILITARY. INHO, it's a bit worse. You're use to getting the recognition from your higher-ups but out here, you don't get much if any.
Ma'am, as a recommendation, I request that you keep your officer career but still pursue your education. If you cannot balance AD and college, why not try Reserve? I don't know much about the officer-side of things via Reserve, but it wouldn't hurt to talk to someone that is either in the Reserves or was.

I actually had a wonderful SWO reservist work on my first ship for a couple of months, and his insight was very valuable to me. The military (active duty at least) just doesn't fit in with my life plans, though I am very happy to have served my time in service to my country. I've had customer service jobs before joining, so I have a little bit of insight into what civilian jobs and recognition/advancement are like. I do very much appreciate the warning though!! It does not go unnoticed. :)

LT (Join to see) - Ma'am, I don't know where you are going to look for employment and forgive me for sounding like a parent, but please take heed of the difficulty in finding a job that will work with your lifestyle (finances, etc.)
I say that only because I try to look out for the best interest of people, both enlisted and officer and I'm going through that struggle.

PO1 (Join to see) - It is always nice to find anyone with genuine concern. I do have some schooling to achieve once I get out, but I am willing to conduct many different types of work, even if it's in the non-profit/volunteer sector. I got a lot of good links too from posts associated with COL Mikel Burroughs. I hope that your struggles are remedied soon!
