However, per capita, the US is only 40th in the medal count. It's easier to have the best when you have the most. =)

TSgt Heather D. - I think GDP is a decent metric because it reflects the environment that the athletes train in. Olympic training facilities for US athletes are top of the line. Interesting number - each medal we won cost about $400,000 (regardless of Gold, Silver or Bronze). But, that's only taking into account 2015 spending. It's a 4-year run up to the games... if we added in the other years, the number would probably be close to $1.6 million / medal.
