There is no regulation for the POTUS to render a salute as SGM Erik Marquez pointed out already. Times change our POV; I think it was Reagan who started it with departing AF1 and then folks asked, "why is he saluting, he's not military?"
We laugh when they mess it up as SSG Michael Hartsfield posted and are shocked when they don't. I'm am conservative, but just keeping it real. The Clinton's were downright disrespectful towards military and government regs and property. PBO is just not very concerned about us.

SSG Michael Hartsfield - It's just another opportunity for one to praise his favorite politician and another guy to dismiss theirs. We should focus more on policy than this stuff.

MAJ Charles Blake if I ever get back to Texas, I owe you a shot and a beer. That last sentence was the clincher for me.
SGM Erik Marquez what if Obama did say what you feel he should have said? People that don't like him would have beat that into the ground so hard, it would have turned to coal. Also if he did do as you suggested, would you have any more respect for him than you do now?
BLUF, it doesn't matter what Obama does, did, has done, or isn't doing as people that don't like him will always find fault with him. Like the good Major said, it's policy we should be concerning ourselves with when in comes to our presidents rather than this tripe

SSG Michael Hartsfield - By the time you get back here, I hope to be gone! However, I like beer, shots and conversation.

Yeah, because nothing says "I respect the military I command" than saluting with your pet in your arms

Of course because during your lengthy career in the United States Army you never once made a mistake a faux pas blundered an attempt to do the right thing but in hindsight it was not

If that's the best you can come up with the show President Bush disrespect for the military I think you've done more to prove others point then your own

On the contrary SGM Erik Marquez, it's highlighting how the "faux pas" of someone you like will always be justified and how you will always find fault in someone you don't. It seems that every time I pull up RP, someone is complaining about Obama and, when you show someone doing something similar or worst, you get "At least he made the attempt?" Also, in my lengthy career, I have ripped up Soldiers for doing this and was ripped up by NCOs not unlike yourself for committing this "faux pas" because, as this SGM to me as a young Private and in the front leaning rest "You know better because you were taught better."
I was told that if you continue to see issues in something, you need to look at three things: the situation, the doctrine, and the mirror. If all you see is the bad in Obama it's because you all want to see it.

If one were to take an honest look at the totality of how both of those men treated the military you would come to an obvious conclusion, a conclusion some will refuse to see ....the obvious disrespect one shows and the obvious respect the other shows.
No different then the justification some will provide Mr. Obama no matter his transgressions, no matter the justification Clinton supporters will provide, no matter her criminal acts and yes no matter the justification a Bush supporter will make when he makes a valid attempt to honor the Marines protecting him but does so in an inappropriate fashion
