OPINION: From previous experience, "male robbery suspect armed with a gun" is about the extent of information (perhaps identifying clothing and physical features if victim(s) are capable of providing it to dispatchers) most law enforcement officers receive about any suspect(s) when radio/computer assigned to a rapidly developing crime in progress. The age of the suspect and lethality (BB versus smokeless powder cartridge) of the weapons used in the commission of the crime is accurately determined long after the smoke and adrenalin subsides, usually by detectives and forensics technicians.
In other words, this is not a case of society's obsession with guns, but one young man's decision to use a gun (regardless of caliber), equipped with laser pointer to use the fear of death or serious injury to 1) perpetrate a felonious crime and 2) evade justice by feloniously threatening an officer sworn to enforce the law. Choices have consequences...

In this day and age it seems like more and more people are bringing about their own demise by making dumb decisions. And in the process (most) social media make it seem like the cops are the bad guy. It's sad to see a child die but maybe he shouldn't have pulled a gun (even fake) out on a police officer. You sign your own death certificate.

I have several BB guns for shooting squirrels... and target practice some of them are identical in looks, sizes and functioning safety switches... and even the same weight as the real ones...
when a cop see these they are going to respond in kind...

I have an airsoft pistol myself that is modeled after an M9. After buying an actual M9 last year I pulled the airsoft one out just to compare the two and they were exactly the same in shape and detail down to the safety which didn't move on the airsoft pistol but was there for the look. The airsoft pistol was clear plastic with the bright orange tip so of course I never had any issues as a kid taking it out to plink at cans or what not but if I had painted the thing black it could have been very easily mistaken for the real thing.
In the heat of the moment a cop isn't going to sit there and analyze what someone is holding to see if it's a gun, nor are they going to wait for the suspect to prove whether it's real by letting them fire it. Unfortunately too many people want any reason they can to hate on cops and this is a great example.
