California In Crisis: California's expensive education failure

My wife and I met an Army recruiter at lunch yesterday. She was sitting alone at the counter and I asked the waiter to pay her check for her, but was told that someone else already had offered. So my wife invited the young SSG to eat with us. We had a delightful conversation though she said something that concerned me. When I asked her how recruiting was going, she said poorly. When I asked why, she replied that California youth couldn't pass the basic academic entrance requirements. They failed the test. Reading this article, you'll understand why. We can't fix every problem simply by throwing money at them. We need to get the federal government out of education and let local school boards figure it out for themselves, then imitate other districts that are succeeding. That's the way it was supposed to work until the Progressive Movement imposed their will on everyone, telling us that the intellectuals on high knew better than the great mass of US.
