Why does Russia support Syria's al-Assad?

A little more perspective on Syria and Russia's relationship; At a recent training exercise, our leadership was telling us that Russia was our most evident threat, so I just thought this video (although three years old) did a decent job explaining Russia's role. Share your thoughts!!!
