On December 26, 2004, a 9.3 magnitude earthquake created a tsunami causing devastation in Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Maldives and edges of the Indian Ocean, killing at least 230,000 people.

I was in Iraq at the time, but elements of my unit responded to this. Aceh province in Sumatra was particularly hard hit. This video doesn't even begin to tell the story about how villages made of driftwood were simply erased.
