COL (Join to see) Since i usually don't talk to strangers about my service, just using "thank you for your service" is fine as a greeting.Though, most that use the term are just paying vocal service to it.

I don't mind either. Currently I work security at a High School. Couple of the History teachers bring myself and other staff in to talk about our service toward the end of the year. The students react better with us talking about the times we deployed. Its optional for us to do it..

I would prefer being asked about it. I have always looked on military service that took me to Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East as a bad ass travel agent providing me experiences as a civilian I could never have afforded. I love eating good food. I have had that chance in so many countries, I'd only read about before. That is something I love sharing with others and often do when I get thanked for my service.

Excellent! Not to mention, if you worked hard and studied, the wherewithal to be succeed in the civilian world. Would have liked more like you in my division with your attitude.

I made board 4 times in a row before I retired. I was physically worn out by that point, and ready for something else. The year I retired from the hospital, 25 of my fellow 1st Classes did the same. 520 years of experience was gone in 6 months from that place. That had to have had an effect. I would have loved to make Chief, but I was too late in my career to see that happen. I still wouldn't change anything, and I still mentor a junior Sailor even now nearly 6 years retired. I enjoy the mentoring part, and the ability to answer some of her tough questions that her chain sometimes leaves her hanging with.
