typical Liberal and The standard The Civilians have to control every thing... well thats what has gotten US in the situation...

...... “... While I deeply respect General Mattis’s service, I will oppose a waiver," Gillibrand said in a statement. "Civilian control of our military is a fundamental principle of American democracy, and I will not vote for an exception to this rule.”..." ...

Why exactly is it important that a CIVILIAN be in charge of the MILITARY? I would think the Military would be better to be in charge of themselves....and why is it important for the secretary of state to be a CIVILIAN? What is the reasoning...seriously...I really don't know and would like to understand this.

That rule stems back to the National Security Act of 1947. The intent was to ensure the civilian control of the U.S. military. One could make a point that all us retirees are now civilians ;).

There's a long, time honored tradition of the military being subordinate to the civilian leadership. I guess the concern is that folks with a sizeable amount of time in uniform wouldn't deal with things from the right perspective. I'm thinking there was something that happened during or after WWII that stirred up some concern which led to the 1947 law. The line isn't crossed that much and I think that General Mattis gets it so he would do fine.
