Cpl Joshua Caldwell the headline is inflammatory. The actual words said, less so. I will say this, I would expect Abe to apologize for Pearl Harbor, no more than I would expect our President to apologize for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These were horrible history defining moments. They were also acts of war, committed during a time of war. Abe coming to Pearl Harbor is not a bad thing. It is a world leader visiting the spot that was either tragedy or victory depending upon which side you were. I don't know what personal bitterness that the press secretary is talking about. I have seen numerous occasions in which Pearl Harbor Survivors have met with their Japanese counterparts. Every time I have seen it, it is mutual respect one warrior to another. It is not bitterness. It is a strange comaraderie that exists despite the events of December 7th 1941. No apologies are required for acts of war committed during a time of war. Apologies come when atrocities are committed during a time of war, under the guise of being legitimate war tactics. IF Mr. Abe wants to apologize for something how about the Bataan Death March.

It's the comment that veterans should just "get over" their bitterness, what our men and women suffered at the hands of a brutal enemy ain't to just be "gotten over". Accept a visit from their leader as they've accepted visits from ours...sure, but "get over it", I find that comment misguided.

Your comments about Japanese and Allied vets getting along for the most part are true. Also, Japan *DID* apologize for the Bataan Death March and also the British/Australian rail road building ("Bridge On The River Kwai").

Not that American lives don't matter...but you need to remember we were all at war...and many countries did a whole lot of bad stuff...HOWEVER...the bombing on Pearl Harbor was strictly a Military attack...to destroy the navy fleet and airplanes there...its is truly awful that 2400 soldiers and some civilians were killed....but we went to Japan with bombs...ATOMIC bombs and Killed HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of INNOCENT Women and Children...fire bombed Tokyo and killed THOUSANDS of more Japanese MOSTLY women and Children...War is war....but it's NOT right for the US to hold such a grudge...Hundreds of thousands of Japanese CIVILIAN citizens were killed...murdered...and with those bombs....its was HORRIFIC! I cannot even begin to describe to you what it did to people...what it does to your skin...how it melts your body from the inside out...it was BARBARIC... Does this not make us the same as them?

Both of you (PO3/SSG) need to go overseas. My wife is English so I have BBC on. Not "BBC America" - real BBC. Better news and no agenda.

Our leaders have been to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I don't see why their leaders shouldn't visit Pearl Harbor. That said, there are about a billion better ways to communicate that sentiment than how this article portrays the press secretary expressing it. Had he actually said, what the article indicates, he should have issue an apology. Since he didn't those spreading the misinformation should be the ones issuing an apology.

I guess you forgot about Korea and China before they ever attacked us. Almost 5.5 MILLION civilians MURDERED by Japanese forces intentionally. The Japanese killed hundreds of thousands women and children with bayonets because they did not want to waste bullets on babies. They raped and burned things and people of no military value for their pleasure. They killed a half million POWs to go along with all the other war crimes.
When Japan attacked we were not at war. Up to WW2 there were still rules in place on how a country went to war. Even Hitler made a list of demands known before he attacked. No country attacked and then declared war. It was the ultimate insult to America. Japan was asked to surrender several times before a bomb was ever dropped. They refused and if I am correct, that they would "fight to the last child". So that is a declaration that everyone was a military target. We dropped those bombs with a heavy heart. The Japanese killed innocents for pleasure. Who is the bad guy?
In my book, when Japan apologizes and make reparations to the families of those raped and murdered then they are welcome at Pearl Harbor until then they can stay the hell out. Just to be quite clear. My grandfather was at Pearl when it was attacked. I have heard stories first hand.

SGT William Howell - The Japanese treated Koreans and Chinese almost as bad as we treated First Americans, yes I get that. Here is a list of apologies Japan has made:

List of war apology statements issued by Japan - Wikipedia
This is a list of war apology statements issued by the state of Japan with regard to the war crimes and atrocities committed by the Empire of Japan during World War II. The statements were made on and after the end of World War II in Asia, from the 1950s to the 2010s. There is an ongoing controversy regarding the way these statements are categorized, that being the question whether they are formal apologies or general statements of remorse,...
