This is a great story but the question I can't answer is why is the Governor presenting the award and not the POTUS? I get it that the award is 140 years late but I've never seen a MoH awarded by anyone who is not the President. Just strikes me as weird.

Also, I really wish the media would stop using the word "win" or "won" when speaking to earning this award. It isn't like you finish the race first to receive this award.

CPL (Anonymous) - Yea, and I'm not trying to take anything away from that Veteran, if anything the family should feel a little cheated. We have seen numerous MoH ceremonies in the White House, why did this Veteran not receive the same type of honor?

Possibly because it was previously awarded (President Hayes) but not received. It also looks like he received the current Medal, not the 1862 Medal (which would have been awesome).

CW4 Guy Butler - That would have been awesome! I'm on the board of directors of Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Trust and we have one of the 1862 medals out on display in our Hall of Valor. It's pretty awesome to see this piece of our history out on display. And it's a good point about why the Governor presented it and not the President. Just still struck me as odd.
