I love the responses thus far collected in this discussion thread. They are a proper mix of revulsion and skepticism. Both are valid responses to plausible explanations. It's a con or it's an act of racism. Sad, isn't it?

What will be disgusting is to find out he did it himself for an insurance payout. If this was a racist act by a cowardly bigot, hang the coward. If the aggrieved did it himself, he deserves a very public trial with lots of jail time. There have been too many of these incidents lately where it's been found that the aggrieved did the crime themselves. Wait for the investigations to be completed, please.

Before we get our panties in a twist, let's wait for an investigation to be completed. Then, if not some sort of scam, do due diligence and prosecute anyone for a hate crime.
