I would love to see the results of this exercise from a knowledgeable insider. Are we as good as we were during the 70s-80s?

A close friend was a P-3 flight engineer. He can tell some stories about how good we were back then. Another friend was a fire control technician on a nuclear powered electric boat. He claims we knew the precise location of every Russian sub all over the world. Both of them said we were the best of the best at that time. Bleeding edge technology that won the Cold War.
