I cannot think of a worse scourge than slavery. America has been cursed by its history of enslavement and later discrimination of blacks. Even the innocent have suffered, are suffering, and apparently will suffer forever. Yes, there will always be prejudice, but it is no longer legal or even acceptable in polite company. However, it seems that there will always be an interest in preserving the conflict. Sad, isn't it?
