You know what's funny? I used to word Oriental to describe East Asians such as you and I. Guess I'm wrong?

SrA Edward Vong - adjective
1.
(usually initial capital letter) of, relating to, or characteristic of the Orient, or East; Eastern.
2.
of the orient or east; eastern.

Seems cut-and-dried to me. While it's gone out of use, there's nothing racist about saying you're Oriental. Unless saying that I'm white is racist, too.

To me it's the context, not the word.

SrA Edward Vong - Of course. 'You're Oriental' isn't the same as 'Those Oriental motherfuckers'. Same as 'you're White' isn't the same as 'Those White motherfuckers'.

PO1 John Crafton -
Something interesting. I have a coworker who's straight up Russian. She gets very confused whenever we talk about Thai, Chinese, etc. Interestingly, she and many Russians from her community look at it by Nationality/Citizenship. To her, we are all American. What we are (race-wise) is just a cultural thing.

I'm somewhat similar in a sense that I'm aware that I come from an Asian background, but I refer to myself as an American. I'm pretty obnoxious about it too.

May 1991, at a commencement ceremony for a graduating class of the University of Michigan, then U.S. President George H.W. Bush used the term in his speech: "The notion of political correctness has ignited controversy across the land. And although the movement arises from the laudable desire to sweep away the debris of racism and sexism and hatred, it replaces old prejudice with new ones. It declares certain topics off-limits, certain expression off-limits, even certain gestures off-limits."[48][49][50]

I use the term, and honestly, had no idea there was anything wrong with it. When we lived in HI our neighbors were Japanese and referred to themselves and their family as Orientals. This was back in 2011...has it changed since then?

There's nothing wrong with it. Just another thing that liberals want to be offended about. Is it racist if I call you white, or Occidental?

adjective

PO1 John Crafton - I don't walk on eggshells around anyone, for anything...kind of a problem of mine sometimes. And no, I am not married to one of them, I am married to a Texan and I just call her a hick!

And that is pretty much the way I roll. My wife hates when I call her "my old lady" so I absolutely don't say that around her, even though when I am having a beer or two with the guys it might slip out.

I think term is just outdated, just as the Term Negro is for blacks. I do not think harm was intended in his use.
