3.1 is not a bad way to go. I installed home theater systems professionally for several years. If you can afford a 7.1 or 9.1 system and a projection system you can enjoy an even better than the theater experience. I enjoyed 7.1 and a 65" display when I lived in Vegas years back.

But for the budget conscious, or those that are not interested in a dedicated theater, a 3.0 or 3.1 system can be quite satisfying. In fact I use 3.0 channels of audio currently. 3.0 breaks down to a center channel speaker, where the dialogue lives. And a left and right channel speaker for what is basically the stereo effect. Connected to a surround receiver along with the TV, cable or satellite box and a DVD player. After following the wiring diagram you will have a perfectly acceptable and enjoyable home theater without the burden of a second mortgage! If your living situation allows for it pop in a powered subwoofer for 3.1 and rockin' explosions.
