Peer pressure and fitting in are powerful forces for these young people to deal with. I never even wanted to join a fraternity. My fraternity is the Army.

Which is where my concern is with the upbringing - we (parents) need to do a LOT more in this area and not take it so lightly! This "kid" knew what was expected to join this fraternity (the Gauntlet) and all he had to do was say "No thanks!" - and if he couldn't, where the heck were his "friends"? If all his "friends" were encouraging him, he should have chosen better ones!
