What they did to him, he clearly hit his breaking point. Everyone has a point, some can go a longer distance than others before breaking, but break they do. And, people break in different ways. So, I would say between the mental breakdown that he suffered on top of the physical abuse he suffered, it is no wonder that he has diminished brain function. And besides, this saves NK, in a sense. Since this young man is not able to speak and tell the stories of the horrors he saw and experienced, those can be considered well guarded secrets as to what NK does to prisoners. And they are secrets that will die with this young man.

Brain damage from oxygen deprivation...
1) they slow hung him
2) maybe waterboarded for just a touch too long (induced heart failure)
3) crucified him (ropes not nails, hanging from wrists)

Probably just misinterpreted the instructions they got from the folks at the Hanoi Hilton
